Free Lunar New Year Celebration

roosterA free Lunar New Year celebration at the San Jose Museum of Art Saturday, January 28, 2017 from 11:00 AM to 5:00 PM.

This family-friendly celebration honors the various Lunar New Year traditions including Vietnam, China, and Japan.

11 AM – 4:30 PM Hands-on art-making for all ages.
Design a noise-maker that mimics the sound of a rooster. Hey, it is The Year of the Rooster.
Create a paper lantern with a Lunar New Year-themed cutout design.

3:30 – 4:30 PM: Rising Phoenix Lion Dance Association will perform a traditional lion dance. The performance will take place in the City View Plaza. Located across Market Street from the Museum. In the event of rain, a demonstration will take place in the Museum’s First Floor, Lobby.

Día de los Muertos is a Mexican holiday that focuses on gatherings of family and friends to pray for and remember friends and family members who have died, and help support their spiritual journey.

The celebration at San Jose Museum of Art will have live performances, cultural demonstrations, and artmaking experiences for the whole family.

Admission is free; however, reservations are recommended.

See two hand-made, paper mache skeleton sculptures

Local artist Lissa Jones will display a traditional altar, or ofrenda, in the cafe area of the Museum

Take your photo with roaming skeleton performers
