Architect/writer/historian George Espinola dead at 49

I just read (thanks to @nReverse on Twitter) that local architectural historian (and architect) George Espinola has passed away recently. His obituary appeared in the Mercury today.

I only met George once, when he presented on the history of the Wolfe and McKenzie architecture firm at Naglee Park’s home tour this year. Nonetheless, I can say that San Jose is worse off without his dedicated work to highlight our architectural heritage.

South Bay Blog Roundup #3

In the few months since the previous South Bay Blog Roundup, there have been some substantial changes in the local blogoverse. The biggest additions are a couple of a very professional-looking newcomers delivering hyperlocal news to Campbell. I’m also adding links to two excellent blogs that I only recently discovered, although they’ve both been around since mid-2009 covering Menlo Park and El Camino Real.

In other news, we bid goodbye to Silicon Valley Moms Blog as it was absorbed by the Technorati blog empire, and saw Watchdog Silicon Valley rebrand itself as The Daily Fetch.

As always, if you can point us to any local blogs we’ve missed, please leave a comment.

Meanwhile, at Christmas in the Park…

Total Lunar Eclipse 12/20/2010

There is good news and bad news; the good news – tonight a total lunar eclipse and the bad news – tonight overcast skies predicted.

Tonight, December 20, 2010 is the first total lunar eclipse in two years with the next total lunar eclipse appearing April 15, 2014.

The eclipse begins at 10:33 pm PST on December 20 and lasts until 2:01 am PST on December 21. The time when Earth’s shadow completely covers the moon will last 72 minutes.

The moon changes color as it moves into the Earth’s shadow, turning from gray to an orange or deep shade of red. Indirect sunlight passing through the Earth’s atmosphere filters out most of the blue colored light, leaving the orange and red hues.

Temple Grandin (the Movie) and AAC Device

Temple Grandin*

I had not heard of Dr. Temple Grandin until I watched the Emmy Awards. The award winning HBO movie “Temple Grandin” tells the story of a most remarkable woman. She has the determination to live a productive life in spite of autism. Her tenacity to ‘right a wrong’ should be inspiration for us all. After winning 7 Emmys “Temple Grandin” has now been nominated for a Golden Globe – Best Mini-Series or Motion Picture Made For Television. I recommend “Temple Grandin” available on Netflix.

I also recommend TapToTalk a product developed locally by Assistyx for non-verbal autistic children.
