Left Coast Live previews on tap

The local music festival Left Coast Live is still a month away, but its producers are already getting geared up with a series of concerts leading to the big weekend.

This Friday, they’ll put on a concert to match the months San Jose Bike Party theme: “Music Madness”. The concert features the bands Doctor Nurse and Good Hustle. Good Hustle bills themselves as a “funk / jazz / afro-beat” band, and the selections on MySpace emphasize the beat. Doctor Nurse calls themselves “melodramatic popular song”, but their sound reminds me of early, maximally psychedelic, Pink Floyd. The show runs from 6 to 8 pm in the SOFA area of downtown, and the Bike Party starts at 8. This concert appears to be free, but don’t quote me on that.

Next week, they’re putting on a swing show featuring three bands at the beautiful Landmark Ballroom in the San Jose Woman’s Club. Featured bands are Big Sandy and his Fly-Rite Boys, Stompy Jones, and the B Stars. While all three bands promise danceable music, both Big Sandy and the B Stars also emphasize hillbilly and roots tones. There could be a lot of dancing shoes and checkered bandanas at this one. Tickets are $17 in advance or $20 at the door, and doors open at 8 pm.
