Cinequest isn’t the only show in town
If you enjoyed Cinequest, you’ll be glad to know that it isn’t the only film festival to play in San Jose this year. The San Francisco International Asian American Film Festival will also present a 3-day program of films on Asian-American and Asian themes, as part of an overall 10-day festival with its main venue in San Francisco, and additional events in Berkeley as well.
The opening night film will be White on Rice, which director Dave Boyd was touting at the Japantown Farmer’s Market this morning. Boyd’s previous film, Big Dreams in Little Tokyo was filmed in San Jose; unfortunately I didn’t have time to find out this morning if the new film also has local connections. White on Rice will be the San Jose opening night film for SFIAAFF on Friday March 20, at 7:00 pm, with a gala reception following the film. In addition, Boyd and his crew will host a reception at Japantown’s Art Object Gallery, 592 N. Fifth St., on Wednesday, March 18, from 7-8 pm. During the gallery reception, Art Object artists will also be holding a special sale, making this a double opportunity to meet local artists.
The San Jose tour of SFIAAFF runs through the weekend, from March 20 to 22 with five screenings on Saturday and seven on Sunday. Films are shown at the Camera 12 Cinemas, and the opening night reception is at the San Jose Museum of Art. Tickets cost $11 for regular screenings and can be bought at the theater. The opening night film and reception together costs $25.
