A Zeppelin Over Los Gatos

Now that I have your attention… Ferdinand Graf von Zeppelin, a German cavalry officer, built the first airship. It flew for 18 minutes on July 2nd 1900. Zepplin is now a common word used to describe any rigid airship.
The airship is back! Advances in technology makes the modern day airship a luxurious, practical, and safe way to travel. And we are getting one! Actually a Los Gatos couple, Brian and Alex Hall, are having a Zeppelin made in Germany for us to use. Won’t it be grand to hear the command to the ground crew for a Zeppelin takeoff, “Luftschiff Hoch!” Just imagine gliding silently over the San José - San Francisco Bay Area looking from the windows…
You can follow the dream on their blog Up Ship! and check out the business opportunities on Airship Ventures.

Moffett Field is located in the Sunnyvale-Mountain View area of the southern San Francisco Bay, adjacent to Highway 101, approximately 10 miles north of San Jose.
During the mid 1950’s, my Dad’s construction company laid pipe, water and sewer in the area of Moffett Field and Lockheed. One summer day we were able to accompany him to the job site. My brother and I had a great time that day both outside and inside the humongous “garage” known as Hangar One (once home to the airship U.S.S. Macon). All these years later, I still find it fascinating.
Now that the Navy has determined because Hangar One has been found to be toxic, it and our memories should be cast aside. The cost for the clean up would be in the millions of dollars. If saved we might find uses for the structure and repay the debt to the Navy.
