New Apple Store: Los Gatos

Apple

There is always such sensational publicity ‘ballyhoo’ associated with the opening of an Apple Store. Well-heeled people known for their rational behavior, will drive for miles and stand in long lines just to be among those to receive the much coveted T-shirt.

When I heard that was how it played out last Thursday in Los Gatos, I was almost glad that I hadn’t been able to get off work - almost.

Resembling an iMac, the shiny new Apple Store at 23 N. Santa Cruz Ave. stands out from much of the historic downtown, but still manages to fit in.

It is not a big store, but spacious enough to hold the required essentials. The only drawback would be parking, or rather the lack of convenient parking. Street parking is limited and unfortunately the Apple Store has no back entrance leading to the rear parking lot. Getting any purchase larger than an iPhone out to your car may require pulling a big red Radio Flyer Wagon.

you can’t be serious. that’s why we have so much sprawl in the south bay - ppl like u who can’t get off their lazy asses to walk one block from their cars…

We should kindly remember that all are not created equally when it comes to physical abilities.

I have mixed feelings about the Apple store. On the one hand, Apple has great products (unlike MS products, which make me crazy as they crash so much). But - in Los Gatos we have a community with LOCAL stores (not chains), owned by LOCAL people. It just doesn’t sit right with me when Starbucks or Apple or other huge chains move in. I hate to see our town’s personality get diluted and look like “anywhere USA”.

I was very surprised that Apple was approved in Los Gatos. With a smile I ask, “Could it be that the Planning Commission only noticed the plans did not include a bright blue awning?”

Although late, I did make my way over to the new Apple store in Los Gatos for the grand opening. I’m sorry to say, I never made it inside…..way too many people in line. My goal was to photograph the event and post about it here, but I failed to come up with what I felt was a good, and positive angle on the story. So I blogged about it on my blog only.
