Sushi
While growing up in Modesto I never really tried anything outside of chain restaurants or the few local ethnic restaurants - one Japanese restaurant, one or two Chinese, and a few Mexican. It wasn’t until I went to college that the world of food opened up at my feet (and therefore my belly and the terrible Freshman 15+)
I must say that’s one thing I LOVE about San Jose - plenty of options! In Modesto, it was Modesto. If you’re in San Jose you can travel to Campbell, Santa Clara, Sunnyvale, Willow Glen, Milpitas all within a short period of time.
So for today… let’s talk Sushi!
My favorite is the Yummy Roll at Kobe Japanese Restaurant - shrimp tempura, cucumber, crab, and a smidge of spicy sauce rolled in a soy-bean paper roll. Super yum! My boyfriend enjoys the Butterfly Shrimp with spicy sauce at Kobe as well.
Other spots we’ve been and have enjoyed; Sushi Maru, Yo-Yo Sushi, Kazoo Japanese Restaurant, and Ariake Japanese Restaurant.
We used to go to Miyake’s back in college but have since noticed quality has kind of gone down (our opinion, but it seems some Yelp users share similar opinions.)
Now you might be looking at my list and having yourself a good laugh; “You think THAT is real sushi? Boy do I have a few suggestions for you!” Please do contribute! Let others know of the best places to have sushi - everyone has a favorite.
I made a Google Map to the couple of spots I listed - let me know of some more spots and I’ll add them to the map!
So where are your favorite spots? Favorite rolls, specials, desserts?

Hmm, the items seem mouth-watering!

Correction: Sushi Coast is on North FOURTH St.!

Your next sushi adventure needs to be at Sushi Coast on North 4th St. in SJ:

Must-haves are the Godzilla Roll and Lion King Roll, but it’s all good. Nigiri is always huge slabs of very fresh fish. If you want a fancy atmosphere, go elsewhere (doesn’t even have a sushi bar… just tables) but otherwise, it can’t be beat. Warning: closed on Saturdays!
Then, next time you are in Mtn View, go to Sushi Tei, 1036 Castro Street 94040. 650-961-7272 It’s not in the downtown “proper”, but is just the other side of El Camino from downtown. Not as good as Sushi Coast, but reasonable, consistent, and the owners (she’s in the front, he’s behind the sushi bar) are super friendly.
Sushi Tomi on Dana In Mtn. View is great too:
